After my wife, Amanda, and I spent some time in Madrid, Spain, it was time to head back home to NYC. After rushing to the airport and failing at being able to check in online with Etihad, we missed the check-in time for our flight by a few minutes. We found out that it would be almost $600 each to fly back on their next flight to NYC which wasn't for another 3 days. After a bit of research at the airport, we found it was cheaper to go to Lisbon for a few days than pay for another flight home from Madrid and spend another weekend there. For more details on how we did this and how spontaneous traveling internationally can be, check out The Travel Rats.
As it turns out, Lisbon was actually another city that Amanda was interested in visiting anyway so this worked out perfectly for us. Within about a half hour, we were on our way to Lisbon for a few days instead of heading back home to New York. Lesson well learned: Don't always do what you're told is right or the best option, there's always a better way if you look deeper.
With Lisbon being one of the oldest cities in the world, it was full of history along with modern architecture. The people were some of the nicest we've ever met, and Portugal is such an easy country to travel to, it made the whole experience very welcoming. I can definitely see ourselves spending more time there again soon.
